Community

Social activity builds connections that increase trust and strengthen the community, building “social capital.” It can be a benefit to the environment, too, as people learn to rely on each other and share resources. Besides, humans are social creatures, so it’s healthy!

Aside from simply going out with friends, going to civic meetings, and joining in sports or clubs — here are a few ways to get out and about in the Upper East Side:

  • Greenmarkets, open-air farmers markets, can be a good place to meet people from your community.
  • Street fairs are also a great way to connect in your neighborhood — check out the Street Events Calendar at the Mayor’s Community Assistant Unit for upcoming events.
  • Local government — Community Board 7 and Community Board 8 meetings are public and they thrive on your input. Want to put something on their agenda? Simply call, fax or email them.
  • Your city council members and other representatives would love to hear from you to, so why not drop them a note?

And if you join us, you’ll be able to connect and network with other green-minded people in your neighborhood. We get together occasionally to talk and plan, which can be a nice way to meet people in your area.
