I was just introduced to UGS;I loved your BBUG article, & comments.
I use baking soda & vinegar(if the odor is too strong I dilute w/ water) to clean almost everything- it works well & it's purse friendly, as well as environmentally so.

I think the comment about expense is valid; I mentioned Gracious Homes because there may be Moms on the UES who are not aware of the green items available there. I buy almost every item of clothing for my two daughters on ebay; children barely wear their clothes and I have found that I save huge $$$ by going there instead of buying new. Also, you can recycle your plastic baggies; they last forever, just hand wash them and dry them by hanging them on your cooking utensils. Another thing that I believe everyone can do, even if your are on a budget, is to teach your children not to waste. No chucking unfinished food; no flusing toilets when you've only thrown in a Kleenex; shower instead of bathing, depending on the age of the child. My 3 year old has started to love showers and she knows that we use much less water if we takes a quick one instead of filling the tub for a bath. The importance of recycling probably goes without saying. No buying junk food; I stopped when my daughter was born. Sometimes we bake together on the weekends (cookies or some other snack for the week). Or else she gets sliced carrots, fruits, celery with soy butter (she's allergic to peanuts), crackers with cheese (real cheese, real crackers); molasses on bread, a real treat, or her all time favorite which is not so healthy, but truly delicious, Special K or other wheat flakes sauteed in a little butter and brown sugar. It is sooo tasty. I believe her snack patterns are generally loads healthier than her peers and I save a bundle by using what is already in my cupboard. And kudos to all Moms on a budget for raising children in this city, period, green or not.

Thanks Lucie, Jeff and Carolyn. I'm glad you found Jen's inspirational.

And thank you Jennifer for pointing out that there are some financial trade-offs in many decisions to make your lifestyle more environmentally friendly. Everyone has to make their own choices on how to be green to according to their own budgets. There are many ways to save money by going green. We have recommended that people on a budget, like drinking tap water instead of buying bottled water, buying stuff at local thrift shops and ways to save money on your electric bill by using compact fluorescent lightbulbs.

There are ways to green your lifestyle on any budget. We hope to find more examples of this in the future and if you have ideas, please send them to us.

I appreciate Jen's efforts and tips but a lot of the "solutions" simply are not doable for a majority of parents, even those of us on the UES. I don't own a car because we can't afford one. I also do not shop in places like Gracious Homes because it is ridiculously expensive.

I wish you would offer some realistic tips for the average mom, not the wealthy mom. We want to help the environment but MONEY is always an issue first.

This article about Jen is inspirational! She walks the walk, and it isn't easy. Our world needs more Jens because it's their children who will be changing the the environment for the better, for the next generations to come. Kudos to her Mom -- a friend of mine. She inspires me too!
