At last night’s monthly Upper Green Side meeting, we had our first-ever officer elections to help us organize better and assign roles and responsibilities.

Founder Glenn McAnanama, a resident of Yorkville, who lead the Upper Green Side’s initial successful effort to bring greenmarkets to the Upper East Side, was elected President.

Sarah Gallager, a resident of the East Sixties as well as a trained urban forester was elected as a Vice President.

Also elected as Vice President Adam Piontek, a resident of the East eighties, who has lead our Green Restaurant campaign.

Alex Dorival, an Upper East Side resident who has great bookkeeping experience with another non-profit was elected Treasurer.

Lauren Loizides, an environmental science teacher from the East Seventies was elected Secretary.

All were elected by unanimous vote. Congratulations to the newly elected Upper Green Side officers!

And don’t forget to vote on November 7th!!!

Over the last few years the NY State Senate has been a bottleneck for environmental legislation.  Bills such as the Bigger Better Bottle Bill, the Clean Water Protection/Flood Prevention Act, and the Community Preservation Act passed the Assembly in 2006, but died in the Senate.

The goal of the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter PAC in 2006 is to make the State Senate more environmentally friendly.  To accomplish this, the PAC will be assisting endorsees that are determined to pass good environmental legislation in the Senate.

In order to adequately fund the PAC, we need members such as you to make generous contributions.  With your support, the Sierra Club can help elect State Senators who are dedicated to preserving the environment.

We encourage you to attend the reception. If you cannot attend, please consider making a contribution. In either case, please make your check payable to NY Sierra Club PAC and mail to NY Sierra Club PAC, c/o Ken Baer, 91 6th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer is holding a day-long forum on Manhattan’s transportation future. Enrique Penalosa, former Mayor of Bogota, Colombia, will be the keynote speaker. This should be a great event. Penalosa is the inspiring and visionary politician who transformed his city of 7 million into a model for sustainable urban transportation. In recent months Penalosa has held at least two private meetings with New York City Deputy Mayor Dan Doctoroff and has become increasingly involved in the New York City Streets Renaissance Campaign.

If you are interested in the issues that Streetsblog covers or have transportation and public space concerns in your own neighborhood, I’d urge you to attend — even if you don’t live in Manhattan. Here are the details:

Manhattan on the Move: A Transportation Agenda for a Growing City
